I have a 2040 closed center 1980 vintage John Deere. Per Serial number it is closed center hydraulics.

I had a leaking fuel pump which I took off and resealed and it now works well. Before that wasnt having any problems other than loss of power from leaking fuel injector
pump.
Power is back and it is running well. on to the next problem:

As I was backing it out of the shop discovered i had not cinched down one of the hydraulic lines for the front hyd pump. It popped off and shot hydraulic fluid everywhere before i could get it shut down.

Went ahead and connected it and refilled missing fluid. Now hydraulics are out. no power steering, no loader no 3 point.

Drained fluid, Checked sump filter (wasnt great but wasnt bad cleaned it) changed hyrdaulic filter, refilled it. nothing.

Took the hose loose feeding the front pump and it shot out fluid at a good clip so it seems to be getting fluid up to the pump but i dont have a specific gpm or anything.

looked for the stroker valve or whatever that the front pump is supposed to have possibly and it doesnt just has a solid bolt in that spot. I cracked it loose and let it bleed a bit and one on the other side as well no change.

3 pt was down but at some point it came back up. wont lower i guess because there is no weight on it but it is in the up position and not responding. I looked for any obvious oil running thru the hole and dont see any.

really at a loss what to do with it. I would greatly appreciate any next steps to take. Really hate to call someone to do it as it is probably more than that tractor is worth but if we can get it running reasonably I would like to as she is a handy back up beast of burden and i am pretty fond of it it is a solid built tractor.

The shaft is turning and I am guessing is turning the pump but I do need to shine a good light in there I guess and make sure it is actually turning the pump and not just the shaft that goes to the pump under the radiator but that part is definitely turning. John Deere did not give a lot of room in there to look

ty in advance for any help it would be greatly appreciated

I also forgot to mention that i took out the bypass valve above the hydraulic filter housing and cleaned and checked it to be sure it was not bound up and it appeared to operate fine with moderate pressure.

Did you check/clean hyd oil suction screen? If no I recommend performing that task. I suggest to acquire a destroking screw & after installation screw DS down to stop with engine operating at idle then back out to stop. If any foreign material happened to be in stroke control seating area then maybe it will be dislodged.

Yes sir I did do that one and the valve above it. wasnt sure if there was one on the front pump as well but i definitely did the one in the picture i pulled out and cleaned it well it had stuff on it but not terrible and put it back in. I pulled that bypass valve out and checked it as well.

it is pumping oil up to the reservoir tank seems to be at a pretty good clip but i didnt measure actual GPM just eyeballed it loose for a second and it was flooding out.

I will look at trying to find a destroking screw I am guessing there is no point in pulling that bolt out and letting it bleed for a second? it just has a big solid bolt in it.

is there a way to do that without the screw or do you have to have one to make it work?
