Illini basketball roster reset: Who left, who returns and who is on the way (2024)

Here's a look at who left, who is returning and who is on the way to the 2024 Illinois basketball roster.

CHAMPAIGN — Get ready for a new-look Illinois team after an appearance in the Elite Eight for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Between players out of eligibility, jumping to the NBA or transferring, Illinois will return just two players from last season's team that finished second in the Big Ten, won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to theElite Eight.

Head coach Brad Underwood and his coaching staff — including newly-returned assistant Orlando Antigua — have embraced the transfer portal and the ability to upgrade talent each offseason.

"I mean he is as the portal is no doubt a prominent piece of everything that we're doing," Underwood said. "We're not shying away from that. I love the pieces that Tim (Anderson) and Geoff (Alexander) have brought into this point and as that portal continues to evolve from players not just going in here late but around the world as well, I think there's a tremendous footprint that could be left by Orlando in terms of those areas. He'll be very dialed in as well."

Illinois brought in three transfers a season ago to play alongside Terrence Shannon Jr., who transferred to Illinois two years ago, and Coleman Hawkins, a four-year player at Illinois.

And this offseason, Underwood leaned back into the transfer portal in rebuilding the roster.

"Sometimes continuity can be — you can have too much and I think there's a certain excitement that comes with the newness," Underwood said last month. "I think there's some level of comfort when you have guys back and you have guys that are comfortable. I was very comfortable obviously with Coleman (Hawkins) and Terrence. I knew what we had in those guys, but on the other hand, there's just a tremendous sense of excitement. I think the guys we've got and the guys I know we're going to get are really talented and can do some different things, so I'm excited to see how that all comes together."

Illinois isn't done in the transfer portal and still hasthree open scholarship spots to fill out its roster, likelywith a wing and a guard.

Note: This will be updated as Illinois continues to add to its roster.

He's more of a developmental piece for the Illini and understands that he'll need to spend time with strength and conditioning coach Adam Fletcher when he arrives on campus.

Tomislav Ivišić, C: Illinois was looking to upgrade the center position and do so by adding Croatian big man TomislavIvišić. The 7-foot center is expected to immediately slot into the starting lineup and is the twin brother of now-Arkansas big manZvonimir Ivišić, whom Illinois assistant Orlando Antigua coached last season in Lexington. In 24 games for SC Derby this past season in the ABA League, Ivisic averaged 7.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 0.9 blocks and 1.3 assists. Jake Davis, G, So., Mercer:Davis averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 28.6 minutes for Mercer last season while shooting 41.9% from the field and 38.7% on 3-pointers. The 6-foot-6, 210-pounder has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Davis showed a lot as a bigger wing with the ability to shoot and come off screens last season. He should slot into Goode's role for the Illini and has the potential to grow into a bigger role with more eligibility remaining beyond this year.

Carey Booth, F, So., Notre Dame:Booth averaged 6.4 points, 4.3 rebound and 0.5 assists for Notre Dame last season. The 6-foot-10 forward shot 39.1% from the field and 29.7% on 3-pointers. Booth is ranked the 94th-best transfer in the cycle, per 247Sports, and he is still raw but has NBA skills. He's plenty talented and it will be up to this coaching staff to maximize his talent for both the short and long term. Booth also doesn't turn 19 until July.

Illinois recruited him hard out of high school and landed the still young sophom*ore the second time around.

White began his career at USC before transferring to Louisville and the versatile forward gives length on both ends of the court. White was potential to be a go-to option in Illinois' booty ball offense and is effective in the mid-range.

Ben Humrichous, F, Sr., Evansville:The 6-foot-9 forwardaveraged 14.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 41.4% on 3-pointers in his first season at the Division I level after transferring from NAIA Huntington. He's ranked the No. 109 prospect in the transfer rankings.
